Nanny overtime calculator

In short

Enter your hourly rate and the hours you worked in a week. The calculator pays hours up to the overtime threshold (40 by default) at your regular rate and hours above it at the rate times the multiplier (1.5 by default), then shows regular pay, overtime pay, weekly gross and annual gross.

Your numbers

The values shown are an example. Replace them with yours.

Your regular pay per hour before tax.

Total hours in the week. Decimals are fine, for example 42.5.

Weekly hours before overtime applies. Often 40, but check your agreement.

Time and a half is 1.5. Double time is 2.

Gross pay only, before tax. Not tax or legal advice.

This calculates gross pay only, before tax. It is not tax or legal advice. Overtime rules vary by state, and some states use daily thresholds as well as weekly ones. Some roles, such as live-in domestic workers, may be treated differently. Check with your state labor department or a payroll professional for what applies to you.

How nanny overtime pay is calculated

The simplest version of overtime pay has two parts. Hours up to the threshold are paid at your regular hourly rate. Hours beyond the threshold are paid at a higher rate, which is your regular rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier. Add the two amounts and you have the gross pay for the week.

A worked example

Say you earn $22.00 an hour, overtime starts after 40 hours and the multiplier is 1.5. You worked 44 hours this week.

StepCalculationResult
Regular hoursThe smaller of 44 and 4040 hours
Overtime hours44 minus 404 hours
Regular pay40 × $22.00$880.00
Overtime rate$22.00 × 1.5$33.00 an hour
Overtime pay4 × $33.00$132.00
Weekly gross$880.00 + $132.00$1,012.00
Annual gross$1,012.00 × 52 weeks$52,624.00

What the calculator does not do

  • It uses a weekly threshold only. Some states also count hours over a daily limit as overtime, which can make a week with long days cost more than this shows.
  • It does not take out income tax, payroll taxes or any other deductions. The results are gross pay.
  • The annual figure multiplies one week by 52. A real year has holidays, sick days, unpaid weeks and weeks with different hours, so treat it as an estimate.
  • It does not know your agreement. Some families pay a flat weekly salary, pay overtime at a different rate or do not pay it at all. Use the settings that match what you actually agreed in writing.

Get the hours right first

The calculator is only as good as the hours you put in. Record the real start and end of each shift, subtract any unpaid break, and total the week. The free printable nanny timesheet is built for exactly that, and the invoice template turns the result into a bill with regular and overtime on separate lines.

Track the hours that feed the calculator

NannyLog’s hours tracker records each shift with one tap to clock in and one to clock out, so your weekly total is already there when you need it. Each family keeps its own hours and rate, and parents connected to the family can see the same hours. Invoices are generated from the tracked hours and can be shared as a PDF.

NannyLog does not work out overtime premiums itself. Take your weekly total from the app, put it in the calculator, and use the result in your invoice or agreement.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate overtime for a nanny?

Pay hours up to the overtime threshold at your regular rate. Multiply the hours above the threshold by your rate and the overtime multiplier, usually 1.5. Add the two amounts for the week’s gross pay.

Do nannies get overtime pay?

It depends on where you work, how you are classed and what you agreed with the family. Rules vary by state and by role. Check with your state labor department or a payroll professional rather than relying on a general answer.

What overtime multiplier should I use?

1.5, often called time and a half, is the common default. Some agreements use 2 for double time. Enter whichever your agreement with the family says.

Why is there an editable overtime threshold?

Many weekly overtime rules start after 40 hours, but not all arrangements do. The threshold box lets you match your own agreement, for example 45 hours.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No. It shows gross pay, which is before tax and other deductions. It is not tax or legal advice.

Does NannyLog calculate overtime?

NannyLog tracks hours with one-tap clock-in and keeps an hourly rate per family, then builds invoices from those hours. It does not calculate overtime premiums, which is why this calculator exists. Hours tracking and invoices are part of Premium.
